Tejas Trail Crew @
Huntsville State Park
Trip: We will be making multiple trips, full of trail and bridge repair efforts, mixed in with some good trail running, hiking, and mountain biking.
When: Sunday, December 22nd / Sunday, January 5th / Saturday, January 25th / Sunday, January 26th
8am - whenever the work is done for the day. Come for some or all.
Where: Huntsville State Park, 565 Park Road 40 west, Huntsville, TX 77340
What: The park needs as much help as possible to repair trails and bridges after the onslaught of hard rain they received. If at all possible, please sign up for the first two dates. We need to make a big push on those.
GENERAL DETAILS:
These work days will focus on cleaning up existing trails, moving material, creating some re-routes, and repairing bridges from the heavy rains the park received in the recent past.
Huntsville State Park staff and the Houston Area Trail Runners will be your crew leaders. Tejas Trails staff may or may not be on site, as we are juggling lots of dates this time of year. You will be in good hands either way.
Come solo. Bring your friends. Bring your kids. There’s light duty work as well as some proper trail building to do, and basic carpentry tasks.
We aren’t listing a stop time, as we are on a mission. You can start and end at any time, but if at all possible, please do get there for the beginning of it. If you pull in later, no worries. We’ll be sure to communicate a plan to get you hooked up with the group.
Before or after the trail work, you can enjoy some trail running, hiking, mountain biking, relaxing, fishing or reading a book in the pines.
If you have loppers, hand saws, metal rakes, mcleods, pulaskies, fire rakes, shovels, wheel barrows, etc. bring them.
We WON’T need light duty tools like leaf rakes, pick axes, or rock bars for this one.
If you’re in, click the button below, and let us know. Know that we will expect you to be there if you fill the form out, unless you let us know with an email that you are bailing.
LOGISTICS DETAILS:
We won’t be providing meals or snacks for these trips, as the Huntsville State Park staff will be your trip leaders. The park does have lots of water to drink and nice permanent restrooms. But please bring plenty of hydration and calories for yourself to stay out on trail, along with your own meals, as needed.
If you RSVP, it will be free to get into the park, just let the gate tenant know you are there for trail work. Also, make sure you arrive during the park’s operating hours or the gate will have you locked out.
Tent, car, shelter, and RV camping is all available at this park, but you must reserve a spot via the normal TPWD reservation system.
Exact meetup location will shift depending on how the prior date goes. You will receive an email from one of our friends with the Houston Area Trail Runners, as late as the evening before your trail work date. Please set a reminder for yourself to check your inbox for that update (and check your junk box too).
If you don’t hear anything else, follow these directions: Upon arrival, check in at the gate. Then continue on the main road to the Nature Center (permanent building on your right side with parking in front of a concrete wall). Walk up the stairs around the building and we’ll meet on the other side at the picnic tables. There are restrooms, trash cans, and potable water there.
